DIY :: Heart Print Jeans

written by Natalie Ho 2013.01.13

Happy Monday! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I thought I’d start the week off with this cute DIY to add to your closet. I stopped into Anthropolgie a few weeks ago and saw this pair of super cute heart printed jeans by AG Stevie. So I decided to try it myself. I am extremely happy with the results and they looked even better on!

Read further for step by step instructions on how to create this pair of Heart Print Jeans yourself!

DIY heart print jeans, DIY heart denim

What you will need:
  • A pair of skinny/ankle cut jeans, mine are from American Eagle Outfitters.
  • A fabric removeable pen/pencil
  • A piece of thin cardboard
  • White fabric paint
  • Ruler
  • Cosmetic sponge

1. Start by marking your jeans up to create a guide for your heart stencil. I made my hearts 2 inches apart. I started by marking one inch markings first though so that I got an idea of the spacing.

2. Cut a heart shape stencil from a small piece of cardboard and use this as your paint stencil.

3. Pour the fabric paint onto a plate and apply paint using a small cosmetic sponge, ensure to remove excess paint by dabbing onto a test sheet of paper.

4. Start stencilng from top to bottom, vertically.

5. I made my hearts all two inches apart, where I had space for a portion of a heart, I also tried to fill it in, i.e. along the seams. Once again I’ve made my hearts all 2 inches apart vertically and horizontally, and created a ‘diagonal’ grid type of pattern. Follow my image below if you’re unsure.

6. Repeat on the other pant leg and try to be as symmetrical as you can. I found placing the legs side by side and taking a ruler and mearsuing across the two legs works the best.

I’m not big on fashion – jeans and a T-shirt are usually my attire, unless it’s a special occasion. This in one project, however, that I may try. Doesn’t look too cutesy yet still says fashionable without screaming it. I like that idea. Thanks for this great craft idea and for sharing with all of us. Very generous of you! (But now….won’t be seeing ourselves coming and going?) 🙂

Awesome & definitely cuter. Was wondering if you did the back too? Love it either way…

Natalie (My Little Secrets) 2014.01.21 - 10:20 am

I didn’t end up doing the back, I wanted to keep it a tad bit simple. But the Anthro pair definitely were same back and front, just depends on your preference!

I did this last spring to a pair of shorts from AE with stars. I only did one leg though and got tired, but they still look super cute! Yours look so much better than mine. I can’t imagine doing the entire pair of jeans lol.

I love this effect on demin. I have some left over demin material and will try this on that. Then I’m going to make a stroller liner out of it. Thanks for the inspiration!!

I just made these and thanks for the tutorial! A couple of notes…
-I made mine 4″ apart and I think you may have as well or else you’d have more hearts than what you see
– I used a paper plate for my stencil and it worked great since card stock tended to get wet from the paint
– dabbing the sponge on something (I used a paper towel) definitely helped.
Thanks again! I love how they look.

Hi Mareike! I ended up only doing the front, I decided to leave the back simple 🙂 I hope you give these a try in time for Valentines!

Yeah you definitely need to change the instructions because there is no way that your hearts are two inches apart….just tried this doing them 2 inches apart and it looks terribly busy and nothing like yours…maybe you should try a new ruler…
