DIY :: Black & White Wordphrase Art

written by Natalie Ho 2014.03.10

Please read: Hi everyone! After posting up this project, I contacted Kal to see what she thought about this post as I didn’t want to offend her or any other artist for that matter for using her work as my DIY project inspiration. When I first came across her artwork on Pinterest, I didn’t realize it was an original piece and went ahead and used it as the basis for this recreation. After doing further research, I realized that Kal is a passionate artist and felt inclined that I should reach out and ask for her permission.

Kal has expressed to me that she’s not thrilled with me using her work for this DIY project. I absolutely understand where she stands. My intention for posting this project, and all my other projects is to encourage creativity, by no means would I want to discourage people from appreciating original and unique artwork.

Therefore, I’ve decided to remove the tutorial steps below, but I’ve left the original copy and photo as reference. Sincere apologies to Kal and to you my readers! I hope you’ll continue to check back for other DIY projects and I’ll be extra careful recreate original artwork in the future.

Please feel free to share your thoughts as you wish.

My Best,

Natalie

Greetings! Another DIY art project to share with you today! I purchased a couple of smaller gallery canvases when I went hunting for a large one during my last DIY painting. I’ve been thinking about what to do with it until I saw this amazing piece ($4,000 which is now sold out) of artwork by Kal Barteski, her work is truly amazing!

I’m definitely pretty good at DIY-ing and creating copy-cats of originals, but don’t mistake me as an artist! Kudos for the true artists (like Kal Barteski) that come up with unique and original pieces that allow me to become inspired and unleash some parts of creativity from within. Clearly if I was as talented as a true artist, I’d be able to come up with something original… in another lifetime perhaps!

What do you think of my replica? Please check out more of Kal Barteski’s prints, some of them are very affordable!

Thanks for stopping by! I’ve slowly started to fill the house with more artwork and decor. I find decorating an evolving process. I don’t believe I’ll ever be done, that’s that fun part about it! Next, I’ll show more photos from my office transformation, but here’s a sneak peek.

Hope you’ll have a fabulous week, check in soon!

I love this piece! What kind of brush did you use?

Hi Briana! I’m so happy you love this project! Oddly enough, I actually used a eye shadow brush for this project! I find that the brush is much finer and creates a nice smooth stroke. Plus I had a ton of them laying around! 😉

A very, very smart looking piece. Black and white sounds boring but I think it’s a fantastic way to spice up a room with some contrast. We’ve found that whites are very popular when painting homes in Toronto and to accent it with something like this really adds life. Great work!

Thanks James! Glad you like the piece. I definitely like white painted walls – it’s so fresh and sharp!
